Based in Boston, MA,  This Life is a practice is a collection by Erin Mckay. Her posts explore what it means to be true and authentic to oneself, through joys and the challenges, ultimately leading to discovery of what we are meant to do in this one, fleeting lifetime!

Mount Auburn

We set out, her and I, to search for signs
what will we find, we wondered
we set off down Acacia Lane, Honeysuckle Path
the sun providing a respite
from the previous clouded week
we ate chocolate cookies
powdered sugar dusting our lips and
our unsheathed raincoats
we pressed our bodies against the trees,
trunks of birch, maple, and horse chestnut
closing our eyes trying to glean
knowledge from the bark
how rooted down they must be
to reach so far and wide with their branches
towards the heavens
the hawk swooped down, as I knew it would
messenger of the spirit world
telling us of worlds unseen
from his post on high
the sphinx, bold and strong,
a reflection of our solar worship
enigmatic in its mysteries
you, my friend, your own enigmatic mystery
like a dandelion seed in the wind
gently floating, then settling
and taking root yourself so that
you can spread upwards towards
the sun in the sky
which is shining, even when its dark outside
and just like the love letters
on the cool cemetery stones remind us,
(perhaps the sign we were looking for?)
distance doesn't separate us,
we know better than that.
